Ashlar headstone with shaped, shouldered top. To Samuel Slack d. 22nd Feb 1728 age 35. Also Elizabeth Slack his wife she d. July 31st 1760 age 69 years. They appear to have been engraved by the same hand. To me, the thinness of the stone suggests a recut. This headstone may have been made, on behalf of their descendants, as proof that Elizabeth was married to Samuel Slack. For a smallholder, such proofs may have shown continuity of land use and nominal ownership. This was vitally important if the Squire was making enclosures, as subsistence farming land could otherwise be lost to ordinary villagers. (Photo Apr 2014).
