University building. Early 1930s. By Lanchester and Lodge. For
the University of Leeds. Portland stone with brick to rear;
roof not visible.
2 storeys with attic. Symmetrical 2:1:7:1:2 bays breaking
forward successively. Plinth: 1st-floor cornice with animal
heads and blocking course; plainer 2nd-floor cornice with
parapet. Central 7 bays have giant pilasters with acanthus
capitals flanking windows with geometrical tracery and
decorative panels between those on each floor. Other windows
are metal-framed with margin glazing bars and transoms to all
but the shorter attic windows. Bays flanking 7-bay break each
have opening with moulded architrave on ground floor (panelled
double door with traceried overlight to left, window to
right), and 1st-floor window with head keystone and corbelled
balcony with decorative iron balustrade. Winged head above
central, attic window. Right return: 5 bays, 3 central bays
breaking forward on ground and 1st floors and having central,
pedimented, ground-floor window.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Lanchester and Lodge were also responsible for the Parkinson
Building (qv).
