Description

LEEDS

SE2833 WELLINGTON ROAD
714-1/34/423 (East side)
19/06/86 The Half Roundhouse

GV II

Heavy engineering repair shed, now commercial storage
premises. Mid C19, altered C20. For the Leeds and Thirsk
Railway Company. Brick, corrugated iron roof. Single-storey;
semi-annular plan.
Bays defined bay pilasters which rise into dentilled eaves
cornice with similar band dividing upper and lower portions of
bays. Central infill, not of special interest, masks former
segmental-arched doorways with fanlights, now blocked. 4
keyed, segmental-arched windows to each bay, the 2 lower
windows tall and now blocked; ends have 4 windows at each
level. 2-bay rectangular projection on N side in same style.
Continuous skylights to both roof pitches.
INTERIOR: brick piers, corbelled at top and linked by
decorative brick bands, support tracking system for overhead
travelling crane. Cast-iron roof trusses with vertical and
diagonal struts and tension braces.
A site plan of 1853 shows this building, although its exact
date of construction is unknown. Engineering repair shed
rather than a locomotive building, as has been formerly
assumed.

Leeds City Council: 1985-: 5; Leeds City Council Department of
Planning: Director's Report, EDG/RMM Q202/2, 24 March 1986).
