Railway viaduct. c1846, altered C20. Thomas Grainger,
engineer. For the Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company and the
Leeds, Dewsbury and Huddersfield Railway. Gritstone ashlar
with rock-faced rustication.
Overall length approx 300m, composed of a segmental arch over
River Aire, 2 narrow arches, canal arch, towpath arch, approx
10 arches carrying the northern stretch of track which curves
away from the approx 16 arches of the southern track towards
the western end. Chamfered rustication to voussoirs and
keystones, buttresses with recessed panels, deep, heavily
moulded modillion cornice, parapet with vase balusters between
bollards with heavily moulded caps over bridges, similar
bollards at western ends.
Part of the pre-amalgamation railway complex close to the
Roundhouse (qv) which is of immense significance both locally
and nationally; the only example of Grainger's fine civil
engineering design south of the Scottish border. The viaduct
carried the 2 first-generation railway lines to the Wellington
Street terminal.
ALl but the central, original 4 arches are new additions to
the list.
(Fitzgerald, R, for Leeds City Council, May 1985: Report on
the Wellington Street Railway Complex).
