GV II

Large house. c1835 altered C20. Ashlar and stucco, slate roof.
Heavy modillion cornice and blocking course. 2 storeys, 3
bays, centre projects slightly, in rusticated stucco, with
parapet and cornice.
Centre 1st-floor 3-light window with pilasters and pediment,
other 1st-floor windows in moulded architraves. 2 ground-floor
semicircular bays with entablatures and curved sashes, central
doorway with attached columns supporting pediment,
semicircular fanlight, glazing bars replaced with plate glass
throughout.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
One of the row of 3 houses built in New Leeds, land sold by
Earl Cowper for villas outside the town centre. The
speculation was unsuccessful and only a small number of plots
was built on by 1847; the failure of the venture contributed
to Sir Walter Scott's insolvency.
