Sham ruined castle gatehouse. Early C19, restored C20. For
Thomas Nicholson. Random rubble with stone dressings. High
pointed archway with dripmould flanked by high circular
turrets containing stone newel stairs. Quatrefoil traceried
'window', mock arrow slits and vertical light slits for
stairs. Doorways at base of turrets. Wall tops and
crenellation consolidated and rebuilt since 1976.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
A view-point in the extensive grounds laid out 1803-1821 by
Nicholson after he purchased the park from the 17th Baron
Stourton. Overlooking the Waterloo Lake, it also faces the
former Braim Farm, rebuilt in a mock medieval style, now
Cobble Hall, Elmet Lane (qv).
