Pair of houses. C18. Timber-framed and rendered, the render to No.38 is ashlared; gambrel plain tile M-roof with a central stack on each ridge. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attic and cellar; 2-window range; No.38 has C20 2-storeyed rear extension with black boarding on 1st floor and flat roof. Front has 2 gabled dormers and moulded eaves. Two 16-pane sash windows on 1st floor with moulded surrounds. Each unit has a 24-pane segmental bow window with thin reeded pilasters and roundels and wrought-iron bracket under. The cornice/fascia of that to No.38 is original and that to No.36A is repaired. Each unit has a pedimented dentilled doorcase with moulded architrave; No.38 has 4 stone steps, wrought-iron handrail with boot scrapers and 5-panel early C19 door; No.36A has 2 stone steps and C20 door. The render of No.38 is ashlared. The rear of No.36A has 2 flat-roofed linked dormers and a 16-pane sash on each floor. The ground floor has rear door and a 9-pane fixed window in addition to above. No.38 has a gabled dormer and a 16-pane sash window on 1st floor and door on ground floor. INTERIOR: appears to be a handed pair of purpose-built houses, contemporary with, but differing from No.36 (qv) in internal arrangements. 2 separate stacks each with a back-to-back fireplace and central partitions beneath valley. Straight-flight staircases in each rear corner, and muntin-rail partitions and panelled room in No.38.
