The Forge

GV II

Cottage, formerly with forge. Mid to late C17. Timber-framed
and rendered with C20 pargeting; half-hipped plain tile roof
with central ridgeline stack.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2-window range; C20 flat-roofed rear
extension. Front has 2-light asymmetrical casement windows on
1st floor. Ground floor has central C19 doorcase with hood on
consoles and 6-panel C19 door. Either side are shallow sash
windows with margin glazing.
INTERIOR: equal bays of hardwood framing, but with off-set
bridging joists making 3 unequal bays with central stack. One
bridging joist (reused) has quadrant-moulded chamfers and
fireplaces to each room have timber mantel beams. Major posts
on each floor, in centre of each flank wall. Posts are
unjowled and roof has collar and side purlins.
The forge formerly wrapped around north-west corner of house.
