Description

SX 79 NE CREDITON HAMLETS WOODLAND HEAD

6/145 The Old Smithy and
The Penny School

GV II

2 cottages. Probably mid C19, enlarged late C19 and C20. Plastered cob on rubble
footings; stone or cob stack topped with brick; thatched roof. C20 extensions of
plastered blockwork with pantile or corrugated asbestos roofs. Originally a pair
of 2-room cottages with mirror plans either side of central axial stack. Faces
south east. The Old Smithy to left, the Penny School to right. The Penny School
extended one bay in late C19 and again circa 1980. The Old Smithy extended in C20
with gable-ended single storey block under pantile roof. 2 storeys. 5-window
front to main block (mid or late C19 work), all C20 wooden casements. Entry to The
Old Smithy now through C20 extension. Door to the Penny School right of centre
under monopitch roofed hood on curving timber brackets. This hood is apparently a
remnant of an original pentice across the front of both cottages which still
survives with pantile roof on The Old Smithy. Originally both cottages presented a
symmetrical front with roof hipped each end; each had 2 windows and central door.
Interior has some original plain carpentry. C20 extension to The Penny School not
included.
