SS 80 NW SANDFORD

1/176 Barn approx. 20m east of
Dira Farmhouse

Double barn. Probably late C17-early C18. Plastered cob on exposed rubble
footings; thatched roof. 2 barns set end to end each with central opposing full-
height double doors. West side, into farmyard, includes C19 rubble-built lean-to
out-shot at left end and C20 boarded lean-to outshot between 2 doors, and small door
at right end. Slight projecting midstrey walls to right barn but similar midstrey
walls to left barn only partly survive. Left barn door has strap hinges with fleur
de lys finials. Eaves are taken down over midstreys and central portion of wall
between. Roof half-hipped to left and gabled to right. To rear (east) both doors
have slight projecting midstrey walls. Each barn has 5-bay roof of A frames with
pegged lap-jointed collars and were formerly separated by now removed cob
crosswall.
