Crown Court House

A Grade II* Listed Building in Wakefield North, Wakefield

Former Crown Court, Wood Street

Uploader's Comments

This building was designed in 1806 by Charles Watson. He was responsible also for St John's church and the Georgian terraces in St John's North and St. Johns Terrace. The portico, built in the Doric style is almost identical in detail to that of the Parthenon in Athens. It opened in 1810 and closed in 1993. It has since been used by ITV for filming court scenes in the Emmerdale soap opera. Various plans for its new use have come and gone, the latest being for a bar, cafe and restaurant.
To date it remains empty.
