Description

SX 79 NE CREDITON HAMLETS NEOPARDY

6/121 Bridge House

GV II

3 cottages, now a house. Late C17. Plastered cob on rubble footings with some C20
brick; rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; C20 concrete-tile roof (formerly
thatch). L-shaped building originally comprising 3 adjoining one room cottages.
The main range faces south-east and includes 2 former cottages which apparently
shared a doorway, lobby and stair just left of centre. Front lateral stack to left
cottage and gable end projecting stacks to right cottage and third cottage behind.
Latter has door in angle of 2 blocks. Irregular 4-window front of C20 wooden 2-
light casements with large projecting stack immediately left of door. C20
brickwork around and above door suggests this part has been altered.
Interior: each room has chamfered cross beam with straight cut stops and, where
exposed, a large stone fireplace with oak lintel and side oven. Roof is
inaccessible but appears to rest on A-frame trusses. The wide straight flight
staircase of main block and altered front doorway suggest communal use and may
indicate that upper rooms were originally intended for separate occupation.
