5/72 Priory Cottage (formerly
29.7.55 listed as Black Houses)
GV II
House, latterly 2 dwellings. Early to mid C16, stack and floor inserted,
largely reroofed and parlour added early C17, altered C19 and C20. Timber
frame, plastered. Thatched roof. Originally 4 bays with a 2 bay open hall
and 2 storeyed bays to left, stack inserted in right bay with 2 parlour bays
added to right. 1 storey and attic. Scattered C20 casements with a glazed
door to left, three 2-light eyebrow thatched dormers. Rebuilt ridge stack to
right of centre. Left end added internal kitchen stack. To rear a restored
first floor diamond mullioned window, 3 dormers, 2 lean-to outshut additions.
Interior: evidence of a partition with a single doorway between 2 original
storeyed bays, hall has an inserted stop chamfered axial binding beam with a
mortice in post for original open truss arched brace, parlour has chamfered
storey posts and an ogee stop chamfered cross axial binding beam. First
floor: open truss arched braces and tie beam removed, square crown post
survives extended down to binding beam, arched braces to collar purlin, closed
truss at left end of hall, clasped purlin roof over parlour addition.
