serving back-to-back fireplaces. Principal rooms at the front and service
rooms to rear.

Exterior: Symmetrical 3:1:3-window front of C19 horned 4-pane sashes, all
with stucco architraves. The outer 3-window sections are in full height
canted bays. Continuous sills on both floors supported on fluted brackets and
first floor band has a dentil frieze. The ground floor windows have
shouldered architraves. Centre first floor window in recessed panel.
Basement has windows in the bays, also in recessed panels. The drop for the
basement windows is fenced by plain iron railings. Central front doorway
contains a C19 part-glazed 4-panel door and overlight behind a porch up 5
stone steps; Ionic columns and moulded entablature including a dentil frieze.
Low pitch parallel roofs are hipped both ends.

Interior: Not inspected but original joinery and other detail is suspected.

The front courtyard is fenced by original spear-headed iron railings set into

Gates House is the centre one of 3 good C19 detached houses on the north west
side of The Green.

Formerly known as Sunnyside it was in the early C20, the home of John Betts, a
partner in the firm of Peto and Betts, major railway contractors.
