Fire station, now shop and office, and attached cottages. Built 1873 for Beckenham
Volunteer Fire Brigade at the expense of Peter Hoare, owner of the Kelsey estate
at Beckenham. Red brick with polychromatic details; gabled plain tile roof; brick
ridge and end stacks with oversailing courses. Mid Victorian Domestic Revival style.
2 storeys. Front of 2-window range, with central clock tower, polychromatic
segmental arches over paired plate-glass sashes and wide ground floor entry. Corner
to side elevation articulated by splayed corner with moulded detail and external
end stack. Triple-gabled left side wall in similar style, with hipped and gabled
bracketed hoods over panelled half-glazed doors. An early example of an
architecturally pretentious fire station.
