Description

1671 Water Street
(south side)
TF 0306 1/468 Row of Cottages to rear of
No 10
II GV

Row of formerly 7 now 5 cottages. Late C17, altered to form cottages late C18 as
part of St. Martins Workhouse. Coursed limestone rubble with Collyweston slate and
concrete tiled roof, single red brick gable stack and 3 large stone ridge stacks.
2 storey 13 bay front with a blocked doorway and evidence of earlier openings.
5 planked doors and 8 2-light casements. To first floor 6 2-light casements and
a 5 light casement, arranged in pairs, to eaves. All openings have timber lintels.
Oak staggered butt purlin roof. The absence of structural divisions of the roof
between the cottages suggests conversion in late C18 from a barn. Source RCHM Stamford
