Hospital buildings. 1907-9 by Woodd & Ainsile, Woodhall and Son, builders.
Red Crowborough facing brick with Newington Red dressings and faience cornice
and plain tiled roof. H-shaped main block with corridor link to entrance
block with side wings in Neo-Georgian style. Entrance block dated 1908 on
downpipes of 2 storeys on plinth with rusticated quoins and 4 giant pilasters
to moulded cornice to hipped roof with stacks to left and to right. Four
glazing bar sashes on 1st floor with moulded aprons, and 3 full height glazing
bar sashes wigh guaged keyed heads, and normal sized are to left of double
panelled door at centre right with traceried rectangular fanlight in moulded
stone surround. Single storey flanking wings with open pediment gables on
rusticated quoins, with keyed oculus over glazing bar sash. Corridor leads to
H-shaped range of 2 storeys and attic with rusticated quoins and moulded
cornice to hipped roofs, stacks to left, centre left, centre right and right,
with glazing bar sashes. Surround by additions from 1920's onwards all in
similar style. The hospital was built through the legacy of Mr John Nicholas
(£15,500 cost from £16,000 legacy) to move it from the Seamen's Infirmary
across the road (Carramore Hotel, item 12/437). Dated 1908 on downpipes to
entrance block, it was begun 1907 (Ainslie, architect, attending), officially
opened Oct. 1909 by Lord Brassey, Lord Warden Clinque Ports; originally with
entrance hall/outpatients and domestic services (entrance block) and 2 wards
in each wing of main block with 4 private rooms. (Busson, Ramsgate 127;
Kentish Express, 13.10.09, 6.10.09). Wood & Ainslie were consulting
architects to Guy's Hospital, London
