SJ 3489 SLATER STREET
(west side)

No 32

GV II

Former watchmaker's works, unoccupied at time of survey. Early C19; altered. Red
brick, partly cement rendered; coated slate roof. 4 storeys, 7-light window to
1st floor. Ground floor is altered but has double-doored wagon entrance on left
of a bricked 2-light window and blocked doorway; all these openings are beneath
a lintel with stoolings showing a division into 5 openings. 1st floor: projecting
sill to 7-light window under timber-clad lintel; each light has a 16-pane sash,
light 2 being incomplete. 2nd floor is the same except that the lintel is an
exposed iron beam. 3rd floor sill shows a window of same length of which only
lights 4 and 5 remain unblocked, they are unglazed. Truncated brick end stacks.
Rear: 2nd and 3rd floors have intact 6-light windows as front set in exposed brick-
work. Interior not inspected. Together with No 30 Slater Street and No 60 Seel
Street (qv) the buildings form the best known example, in this area, of workshops
associated with watch and clockmaking; the industry reached its peak in Liverpool
in the mid C19.
