Description

TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY FAIRMANS LANE

6/76 Barn immediately south west
of Chill Mill

GV II

Barn. Probably C17. Framed construction, the rear elevation weatherboarded;
peg-tile roof.

Plan: The barn faces east and is sited at right angles to Chill Mill forming
the west boundary of the garden in front of the house. 5-bays with a doorway
on the front to right of centre; rear centre doorway with a porch between rear
outshuts; outshut at left (south) end.

Exterior: Roof gabled at right end, half-hipped at left end. Tension braces
above the middle rail on the front elevation. Some of the timbers to the
front frame appear to be re-used. Pair of full-height plank doors with strap
hinges to right of centre. 3 first floor plate glass windows to the left of
the doors, one to the right, set high up. The rear elevation has a projecting
porch with a hipped roof and catslide roofs to left and right over the
outshuts. Catslide to left end outshut.

Inteior: Access unobtainable at time of survey (1989). An interior
inspection might necessitate revising the suggested dating and would be
recommended before any planning application to ensure that historic carpentry
was not disturbed.
