FROXFIELD HIGH CROSS
SU 72 NW
9/19 Church of St Peter
23/01/86 II
Parish church. 1862, by Martineau. Chancel with north vestry, nave of 5 bays with
a north aisle, south porch beneath tower. Coarse flint walls with stone dressings,
flush cill band, plinth, stepped buttresses; lancets, some coupled beneath quatre-
foils, 3 at the east end and 5 at the west below hoodmoulds. Steep tile roof, with
diaper patterns. The tower has a short spire above the octagonal bell stage, which
broaches to the square lower part; archway to the porch. The interior is Victorian
in a plain Early English style, but 3 Norman arches and columns were reconstructed
here from the old church at Froxfield Green (demolished 1861), being plain arches
and round columns with cushion caps.
