RUCKLEY AND LANGLEY C.P.
RUCKLEY

Duffy's Cottage

II

Cottage. Probably C18 with C19 and late C20 alterations and additions.
Uncoursed and roughly coursed grey sandstone rubble with red brick window
dressings; plain tile roof. L-plan; 2-room plan with C20 addition at rear.
One storey and attic. Gabled eaves dormer to right with C20 2-light wooden
casement; external brick end stack to left and brick stack off-ridge to
right on rear wing. 3-window front; 2-light wooden casements with segmental
brick heads. Straight joint to left of right-hand casement. C20 2-leaf
boarded door in angle at rear. Interior not inspected. In the C18 and for
some time later the cottage served as the village poor house. The old list
description (1975) describes some roof timbers dated c1630 by carbon 14 analysis,
but they were probably reused. It is said that a very large bread oven was
removed when the C20 additions were made.
