ELM GROVE ROAD

TOPSHAM
871/27/10006 The Lodge
GV II
Lodge. Probably late 1850s, contemporary and designed with Grove
House (qv), a villa set in its own grounds. Grey limestone rubble
with dressed stone quoins, slate roof with crested ridge tiles; stone
stacks with ashlar shafts. Tudor style matching the house.
Plan: Overall L plan. Gable end to Elm Grove Road, with the porch in
the west angle between the two blocks. Exterior: Single storey.
Asymmetrical 2-window front, the left hand block gabled to the front
with deep verges and curly bargeboards decorated with blind trefoils
and geometric shapes. Canted bay window to the left hand block with
a hipped roof with lead rolls, glazed with high transomed casements
each light below the transom with 2 panes. The right hand block, set
back and roofed at right angles, has a window with a cranked head
glazed with a matching 2-light casement. Original lean-to porch with
a C20 front door, the right return with a row of trefoil-headed timber
lights. The gable end to Elm Grove Road has deep verges and matching
bargeboards; shallow projecting stack with a moulded cornice and
inward angled cap. To the right of the front elevation a stone rubble
wall with a platband and irregular coping contains a crank-headed
stone doorway with a plank door. The wall, which probably originally
led to the garden, now conceals a flat-roofed C20 addition. The main
block has a left end stack, the shaft similar to the right end stack.
Grove House is not mentioned in White's 1850 Devon, but in the 1879
edition is described as owned by Robert Manning Davy, J.P., one of the
"principal proprietors" of Topsham, also of Oxenway Lodge, Membury
near Axminster.
