House, 2 houses in 1820, now offices in one ownership. Probably early C17 with mid C18 and C19 alterations. Painted roughcast and render over limestone rubble, painted freestone dressings, stone slate roof with 3 small hipped dormers, brick stacks to the left gable end and rear. 3-unit plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic; 3-window range. Bracketed gutter. 3/3-pane sash windows to the outer dormers, 2-light casement window to the centre. The left-of-centre C20 door is set in a C18 raised chamfered doorcase with a pediment on consoles, it is flanked on both floors by 3-light stone-mullioned windows with C19 sashes between 2-pane fixed lights. A similar window to the 1st-floor right has small panes over an early C19 8-over-8-pane sash window. To the far right is a moulded hood on brackets to a chamfered surround and C19 4-panel door. The rear is a C20 rebuild. INTERIOR: a chamfered axial beam to the centre of the ground floor; to the left gable end is a restored stone Tudor-arched fireplace, a large chimney-breast to the rear has a C20 fireplace. The cellar below is now in commercial use. The 1st floor has 2 cross-beams with run-out stops and an open fire with moulded surround and mantelshelf to the left gable end. The 3-bay collar-beam roof has tenoned purlins. HISTORY: this was The Black Horse Public House in the C18. (Chamberlain, Joseph A: Chippenham: Chippenham: 1976-: 112).
