House, now restored and converted into apartments. c1904.
Limestone ashlar facade, quoins and dressings to rear wings,
rubblestone rear wings; hipped slate roof to the main block,
stone slates to the rear and plain tile to the rest; moulded
ashlar ridge stacks to the front, right return and rear ridge
of the hipped right wing. Classical style with some Edwardian
Baroque influences. U-shaped plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-bay range. Balustraded
parapet, cornice, rusticated chamfered quoins, plate-glass
sash windows with edge-roll mouldings to the main block and
6/6-pane sash windows to the wings. The central bay steps
slightly forward and the ridge stacks coincide with the
flanking pilasters. A pediment supported by Ionic columns over
French windows, (the former main entrance), is flanked by
plain windows. Lintel-band, sill-band, raised surrounds and
keystones to the 1st-floor windows, that to the central range
is stone-mullioned with 3-lights. A cornice spans the ground
floor. The ranges to the sides have tripartite windows with
segmental pediments, keystones to each light and panelled
aprons below the sills.
The right return, now the entrance facade, has a stack to the
right-of-centre of the parapet dated 1904; 1st-floor
lintel-band, sill-band and keystones to irregularly-spaced
windows; to the ground-floor right is a C20 Regency-style
swept canopy on trellis supports with moulded architraves to
3 windows to the centre.
The rear wing continuation has a bracketed gutter, sill band
and a hipped roof to a single-storey canted bay to the left.
The gabled rear left wing is 2-window range with a C20 door
and window to the ground floor. The rear of the main block has
a wide semicircular arch now infilled, implying that this was
former stabling.
INTERIOR: not inspected but noted as having panelled shutters
and some original joinery; the staircase was removed during
alterations.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: a rubblestone wall attached to the rear
left wing, approx 10m long and 3m high cants back to skirt a
yew tree and sweeps down to approx 2m.
HISTORY: A map of 1773 shows a farmhouse called "Derrits" on
the site. Sir Henry Hastings Goldney, last holder of the title
of Remembrancer of the City of London, lived here.
