GV II

Farmhouse and outbuilding [possibly a bakehouse]. Circa C16/17, extended circa early C19. Stone, partly rendered. Bridgewater tile roofs with gabled ends. Axial and gable-end stacks with brick shafts. PLAN: A long range, the left [west] and centre of which appears to be of 3-room and through-passage plan, the high end to the right, its hall with an axial stack backing onto the passage; the projection at the back of the low end is probably a stair turret. The right-hand end of the range appears to be an early C19 addition. The outbuilding attached to the front left [SW] corner was probably a bakehouse and ofC17 date. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Long asymmetrical 2:2:2 window range. The right with a dressed stone front with 16-pane sashes; the centre rendered and with 2-light stone mullion windows on the ground floor and a 2-light casement above; the left with 12-pane sashes on first floor and doorway to right. At the rear of the centre part a gable-ended wing, two ovolo-moulded mullion windows and to the right a stair turret projection. Attached to the front left a 2-storey outbuilding with a gable-end stack. INTERIOR: Heavy doorframe at rear of former through-passage and ovolo-moulded doorframe to former hall with exposed ceiling beams. Chamber over hall has stone fireplace with 4-centre arch and moulded plaster overmantel with trailing frieze and pomegranate design, the ceiling with moulded plaster devices in three corners. The low [west] end has a chamfered cross-beam. The rear wing has chamfered ceiling beams. The roof over the centre part has a cambered collar morticed to the principals. NOTE: The manorial court was reputedly held here.
