Terrace of ten houses set over garages. Designed 1962, built 1963 by Span Developments Limited, architect Eric Lyons. Brick cross-wall construction with concrete floor slabs; weatherboarded, with some brick cladding to courtyard. The garages, recessed at ground level at the rear, are semi-sunken to courtyard. The houses are entered from this side. Partly glazed doors reached via steps with cast-iron railings on concrete cantilevered balconies. The fenestration is of thick timber sections, with aluminium opening lights and a strong pattern of double transoms which unify the composition of the buildings opposite. The pattern of long, clerestorey glazing, with thick transoms to the larger windows, is repeated on the garage elevation. Nine windows modified in 1995, but this limited replacement does not affect the group's exceptional interest. Interiors not inspected.
Span Developments Ltd. were England's most important private developers in the post-war period. Their best work is in the Blackheath area, and this group of houses and flats is a prominent and richly modelled example that is amongst their strongest compositions.
