6/10013 Walled Garden, Potting Sheds and Greenhouses at Stansted House
GV II
Kitchen garden walls with attached potting sheds and green houses. Garden walls shown on 1813 and 1825 Ordnance Survey maps but probably dating from C18. Potting sheds early C19 and greenhouses shown on OS map of 1880. Garden walls comprise three interlocking squares with potting sheds and greenhouses attached to the northernmost wall of the central square. Northernmost square has north, west and east walls of Sussex bond brickwork, the northern section about seven feet in height and the side walls about ten feet high, the corners decorated with elaborate stone urns. Central square has walls of English bond brickwork, the north wall about 15 feet high and the other walls about 10 feet high. Stone coping. East, west and south walls have central cambered entrances with square piers surmounted by elaborate stone urns. Gadrooned urns with flowers abo1ve to east and west and fluted urns to south. South square has walls in English bond, about 10 feet high with stone coping. Some stone triangular buttresses. Attached on north side of northern wall of central square are two early C19 potting sheds. These are of red brick in English bond with half-hipped slate roofs. One storey: two casement windows. One leaded light window survives. Interior has brick floors and reused timbers to roof. Attached to south side of north wall of central square is a range of greenhouses. Central part has had the central feature replaced in late C20 after a gale. Flanking this are lean to greenhouses on brick base. Front walls have pivoting casements. Sixteen bays to west and eighteen bays to east, with three, cambered brick arches to east. Interior has pulleys for providing roof ventilation. At either end are attached pavilions. West pavilion is taller than the adjoining range with top opening lights to the walls. Interior has 6 cast iron columns on either side and raised beds. The east pavilion was similar but most of the east wall and the glass were missing at time of survey because of gale damage.
