School, subsequently mortuary, now east wing of No.37 Church
Street (qv) the School House between 1812-68. 1812, with C19
and C20 alterations. Red-brown brick, laid to Flemish bond.
Welsh slated roof, concealed by castellated parapet with stone
band on south, and by low parapeted gable on east.
EXTERIOR: single storey, originally single open classroom (now
subdivided internally in conversion to domestic residence), 3
bays. South facade with Gothic detailing: pilasters frame
panelled recesses left and right, with triple-light wood
casement windows with traceried lancet heads, dogtooth cornice
band above. Centre bay breaks slightly forward, with recess
with yellow rubbed brick 4 centred arch on stone impost band;
C20 glazed porch below conceals doorway, now with C20 glazed
door, under red brick rubbed flat arch.
East elevation of 3 bays with pilasters, recessed panels left
and right with inner lancet headed niches, centre with
triple-light wood window, with traceried lancet heads, and 4
centred arched head under red rubbed brick arch, with yellow
rubbed brick 4 centred outer arch on stone impost band.
INTERIOR: former schoolroom, now subdivided to form kitchen
and bedroom, has arched ceiling and tie beams.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Hertford Green Coat School was one of 9
endowed by Gabriel Newton of Leicester, and the schoolroom
opposite All Saints Church was built in 1812 and was used
until 1868 when the school moved to larger premises on London
Road. The school closed in 1894. This building was
subsequently used as a mortuary and was converted to
residential use as east wing of No.37 (qv) c1960.
