Church of St Peter and St Paul

A Grade I Listed Building in Swaffham, Norfolk

The hammer-beam roof.

Uploader's Comments

The hammer-beam angel roof has 88 angels with outstretched wings, carved from chestnut. All bear shields showing signs of the passion. A further 104 angels are set along the wall plate on either side. During the roof restoration many small pellets of musket shot were found embedded in the angels, possibly after being fired at by Cromwell's supporters to destroy the images.
