843-1/5/173 Quay Walls and Pier

Quay walls and pier. C17, extended 1873 during the Mayorship
of William Selley and 1903-1905, the foundation stone laid by
HRH the Prince of Wales, opened by the Right Honourable John
Earl of Kimberley during the Mayorship of Joseph JP;
WH Tesidder, engineer; EH Page, contractor; the end of the
pier reconstructed 1951. The oldest part (north-west side near
the shore) is vertically-set killas rubble, most of the rest
is reused granite ashlar, some of this above rock-faced
granite ashlar; granite copings and steps. The open end of the
pier is of reinforced concrete over concrete drum piers.
PLAN: built at right angles to the shore and with a short
projecting quay part way along the north-west side; steps to
the inner angle between the 2 and recessed on either side of
the main quay. Above the small quay are 2 dressed granite
panels with moulded cornices and rectangular pyramidal heads.
