GV II*

Small country house. c1810, built for John Bull, the
celebrated Packet Captain. Stucco on rubble; scantle slate
hipped roof with very deep projecting eaves over modillion
cornice; rendered linked paired end stacks, plus hipped wings
with corner stacks; cast-iron ogee gutters with lions' heads
and cast-iron fleurs-de-lis over eaves cornices of wings.
Double-depth plan.
3 storeys with slightly later C19 heightened 2-storey wings;
symmetrical 1:3:1-bay entrance front and also garden front.
Original or restored hornless sashes with thin glazing bars,
those to wings with moulded architraves. Entrance front has
open gable/pediment with relief of Bull's ship, the Duke of
Marlborough, to central bay. Ground floor has
segmental-on-plan porch with 5-bay Ionic colonnade to central
3 bays; fleur-de-lis cresting, key pattern to soffit and
brackets to cornice which continues round the wings which are
fronted by niches with Classical statues; central round-arched
doorway with spoked and decorated fanlight over pair of glazed
doors with margin panes; casement window above doorway with
similar glazing. Garden front has windows of diminishing
height to each floor of centre bays and round-arched sashes
with fanlight heads to ground floor of wings. Right-hand
return has central bowed window bay; Ionic pilasters to ground
floor.
INTERIOR: very fine quality plasterwork and joinery details
and exceptional quality cantilevered spiral elliptical-on-plan
staircase with scrolled wrought-iron balustrade and mahogany
handrail scrolled over newels; lantern above; mahogany
panelled doors and overlights and some rare Flemish grisaille
wallpaper.
HISTORY: John Bull named this house after his ship, Duke of
Marlborough, the 2nd of its name, which was probably engaged
in more action than any other packet ship.

1975-1989: 70-72).
