GV II*

Public house, said to form part of the sextry for the
collegiate church of St Chad, c1475. Surviving visible
structure largely later C16. Timber-framed with some brick
nogging and plain tiled roof.
2-storeyed, 3-window range to Princess Street, with long
elevation to Golden Cross Passage. Main features of street
facade renewed early C20: 4-centred arched doorway to left,
and canted bay window in centre, with passage entry to right.
First floor jettied with moulded bressumer and close studding.
Wide gable in roof with queen post truss. Upper windows are
casements but have all been renewed. Brick infilling also C20.
Long rear wing running down the passage, also timber-framed
with some lath and plaster panel infill, and with a continuous
jetty. Part of the upper storey has been renewed in brick,
possibly in C18, and it has also been raised towards the rear,
with thin timbers and brickwork.
