14/06/74 Nos.42 AND 44
GV II
Semi-detached houses. c1830-1840 (RCHME). Rendered, slate
hipped roof.
2 storeys, each 2 windows. Although originally a symmetrical
pair, the halves now differ in detail. No.42 has 12-pane
sashes over a hipped canted bay, with pilaster mullions, and
dentil cornice, and to the right a 6-panel door under radial
fanlight, on 1 step. The return has a small dormer, and a
12-pane plus deep stair sash. No.44 has a small dormer above
plain sashes. At ground floor, to the left, is a C20 door
under an ogee tent porch on brackets, with a cast-iron column
to the right and a solid cheek to the left.
The left return has a deep stair light. A mid sill band,
moulded cornice, blocking course and coped parapet, and
central stack.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Probably built at the same time as the adjacent St Augustine's
Church (qv) with Nos 34 & 40 (qv) as a group.
(RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 358).
