BURY ST EDMUNDS

639-1/11/553 (East side)
12/07/72 No.8

GV II

House. Early C17 and early C18. Timber-framed and rendered
with roughcast on the west gable and a C20 plaintiled roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys: 3 bays; set gable-on to the street. The
1st storey has one 16-pane sash window in a flush cased frame.
The ground storey has a square bay supported on wooden posts
with a small-paned former shop window . The doorcase has a
moulded architrave and a flat cornice hood. The 6-panel door
is now half glazed. A red brick chimney-stack at the rear has
2 attached square shafts set diagonally on a square base.
INTERIOR: a small cellar below the west bay has walls of flint
rubble and random brick; flat joists exposed in part. It
contains the supporting base of a chimney-stack in C18 brick
but the fireplace on the ground storey has been partly blocked
and the shaft of the chimney removed. The 2 rear bays have
exposed plain ceiling joists and main beam and studding along
the north wall. Fireplace infilled with blue and white Delft
tiles. The upper fireplace has a rounded back and small timber
lintel; traces of original red ochre colouring and lining on
the brick.
On the upper storey some exposed studding in the apex of the
gable. To give sufficient upper headroom the open truss has no
tie-beam: the principal rafters rest on the backs of the main
posts and are linked by a low collar. Much-altered roof
structure; insertions of the C18 and later, including a
ridge-piece.
