53/2000 Clays Barn

Barn erected in C18 but reusing some late C16 or early C17 upright posts and
tension braces. Timber framed barn of 4 bays on sandstone plinth, clad in
weatherboarding with some old tarred elm weatherboarding to rear. Double cart
entrance. Roof now covered in corrugated iron sheeting. Queen post roof with
through purlins, oak rafters and ridge piece. 7 of the upright posts have
gunstock jowls and several have slots for curved beams. The right hand end
could have been floored at one time and this bay also has several large curved
braces of C17 or earlier date in the wall frame. The wall frame has a midrail
and the other bays have C18 diagonal tension braces. The right side end bays
also have diagonal wind braces to the roof. C18 carpenter's marks. Later
bolted dragon posts to strengthen upright posts, C20 lean to extension to left
hand side not of special interest.
