53 and 55, Northgate

A Grade II* Listed Building in Wakefield North, Wakefield

53, Northgate

Uploader's Comments

Like other West Yorkshire towns Wakefield contained many half-timbered houses, most of which were either demolished or encased in stone in the early 20th century. However, an impression of what they might have looked like can be gathered from the façade added to the recently restored building, (formerly the Card Shop, now the Cowshed restaurant), 53, Northgate. Inside is a remarkable plaster ceiling bearing the date 1596. It is one of only two Elizabethan townhouse ceilings to survive in the whole of Yorkshire. The other is in Coney Street, York.
