Hospital. 1863-8 by William Butterfield in Gothic style. This is
Butterfield's only design for a public hospital built in contrast to
the prevalent pavilion plan, east to west with the wards opening at
each end onto a balcony, bathrooms and lavatories in projecting semi-
separate corner towers, a central core of rooms for night nurses,
large easily sloping wide staircase and chapel on the top floor. Built
of red brick with black brick polychromatic decoration. Slate roof.
3 storeys with irregular fenestration. East end has east window of
chapel with rose window. This is flanked by 2 storey hipped pavilions.
North or entrance front has to east 2 gables. The left hand gable has
a traceried window with quatrefoil motifs. The right hand gable has
trefoliated windows. 2 lower floors have 5 4-centred arches with
Pseudo-machicolations and black diaper brickwork. Centre has gambrel
roof. 2 gables project with Porter's Lodge to ground floor with 5
light bay with Caernarvon arches followed by a further projecting
transept with 2 tall trefoliated windows with clock in gable. To the
extreme right the 2nd floor has 4 cambered windows and the lower
floors have 5 4-centred arches with sashes. The wing terminates in a
3 storey pyramidal tower now attached to later wing not of special
interest. Rear elevation has to extreme right an arched window with
quatrefoils and trefoils, to the left a Caernarvon arched window with
3 quatrefoils and 4 trefoils then an arched window with 1 quatrefoil
and 2 trefoils. The lower floors are concealed by C20 infill: to the
left is a central pavilion with 4 : 4 : 3 : 3 windows and a ward block
with C20 extensions. Interior has wide staircase with mahogany
handrail and iron balusters and chapel with original roof and east
window with stained glass by Clayton and Bell of 1881 depicting
various of Christ's healing miracles. A further stained glass window
to the south depicts charitable works.
