Late 1840's villa, most impressive of the Crescent villas, built by the Uppleby
family in an Italianate Cinquecento style. 2 storeys ashlar. Symmetrical design
3 bays with taller slightly projecting centre bay. Dentil projecting eaves
cornices. Rusticated chamfered quoins. Panelled band between storeys. The
taller centre bay has heavy rustication to ground floor. Quoin pilasters to
1st floor with slight perspective batter and pilasters flanking centre window
with archivolt. Blind balustrade below window and between pilasters. On the
ground 2 very narrow side lights to entrance which has double panelled doors,
semi-circular fanlight, the rustication is carried into reveal, chamfered voussoirs
and keystone to arch. The flanking lower bays have one window each, that on
1st floor blind with panelled flanking strips, console brackets over to cornice,
blind balustrade balconette on fluted console brackets. Ground floor windows
in eared architrave with keystone, shaped brackets supporting sills rising
from low moulded plinth, To right a single storey wing, probably of the 1850's,
tile cornice continued from string course of main block balustraded parapet.
External chimney with quoins pierced arch and cornice capping. 2 blind eared
architrave windows. The south garden front stands on a balustraded rock faced
terrace (sloping site). Similar elevation to entrance front but without pilasters.
Central canted stone bay window to ground floor with bracket cornice and balustraded
parapet. The west 1850's wing on this front has a basement and eared architrave
windows with keystones and fluted consoles to sills, The entrance hall inside
rises through 2 storeys with cast iron railing to gallery. Similar balustrade
to staircase. Set in fine grounds down to the Valley.

Woodend, Art Gallery, Londesborough Lodge and The White House
(with gates and gate piers) form an important group.
