Description

CHITTLEHAMPTON
SS 62 NE Milehouse Cottages
2/113
-
- II

Pair of cottages, probably originally single dwelling. C16 core but entirely
remodelled in late C19 and extended at right end in C20. Rendered stone rubble and
cob with brick dressings. Hipped thatch roof. Lateral rear stack shared by the two
cottages.
Plan: Internal partitions removed in C20 but consisted in C19 of mirror plan pair of
cottages of 2 rooms each. The lateral rear stack, however, with herringbone
slatework surviving to left-hand cottage, suggests the late C19 plan itself was a
drastic remodelling of an earlier structure. In the C20 an extra bay of 1-room plan
was added at right end, and rear wings, single storey to left, 2-storeys to right,
creating overall U-shaped plan.
2 storeys. 5-window range in all, including added bay at right end. Cottages
originally had symmetrical 2-window range each. All 2-light casements, 2 panes per
light to upper storey, 3 panes per light to ground floor. Cambered brick arches and
quoins. Hipped thatch roofs to C20 porches. Leanto at left end.
Interior: Herringbone slatework to fireplace to left-hand cottage.
