Farmhouse. Probably early C17, extended at left end in C18 and C19. Slate roof
with gable ends. Tall hall stack towards front (but not in usual lateral position)
with projecting bread oven. Brick stacks at each gable end.
Plan Originally probably 2-room and cross-passage plan with hall heated by former
gable end stack to left and formerly unheated smaller room to right of passage which
contains staircase. Original staircase probably in stair turret to rear of hall
which would have been demolished when the dairy outshut was added. Probably in the
C18 an extension of 1-room plan was added at the left end, with a fireplace across
front right angle sharing the hall stack. Winder staircase to rear left-hand
corner. Probably in C19 the house was again extended at left end, so that the
overall plan now consists of 4 rooms and stairhall passage in line.
2 storeys. 5-window range. Upper storey has early C20 fenestration of two 2-lights
and two 3-light casements, all 3 panes per light, except centre window which is
later C20, all ground floor windows are later C20 replacements. Timber porch with
slate gabled roof. Plank inner door.
Interior Hall has chamfered and stopped bressumer and cross ceiling beam. C19
grate to fireplace, with outline of original lintel visible above. Blocked doorway
to rear probably relates to site of former stair turret and to blocked doorway in
rear wall at first floor level. Boxed in cross ceiling beam to room to right of
passage. Dairy has flagstone floor.
Roof: solid cob walls rise to apex of roof at left end of hall and between the 2
added rooms at left end. 2 C17 trusses with principals with short curved feet over
original range. Cranked morticed and tenoned collars, threaded purlins and ridge
purlin. No sign of smoke-blackening. C19 roof trusses over 2 left-end rooms.
