YAXLEY CHURCH STREET TL 1691 20/176 Parish Church of St Peter 13.12.57 GV I Parish church. Original C13 cruciform plan altered c.1290-1300 by the addition of north and south chapels to the chancel, and widening of nave aisles; circa 1330-40 east wall of chancel rebuilt or refaced and roofs of chapels altered; mid to late C15 west tower and spire; late C15 nave, clerestory and south porch. Restoration 1906-10. Walls of roughly coursed rubble limestone and Barnack stone ashlar. Roofs of lead. South elevation: West tower of four stages with clasping buttresses and embattled parapet with crocketed pinnacles at the angles and in the middle of each side; second stage window with single loop-light, belfry window of two tiers of three trefoiled lights in a four-centred head with moulded label. Crocketed octagonal spire with flying buttresses to angles of the tower; two ranges of spire lights of two and one trefoiled lights with gabled heads. Plain parapets to nave, aisles transepts chancel and porch. Clerestory with four windows each of three trefoiled lights in a four-centred head with moulded label. South aisle; south doorway c.1300, two-centred of four moulded orders and jambs with two free and one attached shafts with moulded caps and bases and C17 door; two eastern windows, C15 of three trefoiled lights in a four-centred head with moulded label, western window c.1300 with three graduated pointed lights with moulded label and mask stops. South porch, four-centred archway of two chamfered orders, the outer continuous, the inner springing from attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases; above the archway two niches enriched with crochets and finials; gable parapet surmounted by three carved beats. South transept, south window c.1350 of five trefoiled ogee lights with net-tracery in a two-centred head with moulded label and head stops. South chapel, eastern window C14 of three trefoiled lights with flowing tracery in a two-centred head, western windows c.1300 each with three pointed lights with pierced spandrels in two-centred heads with moulded labels. Chancel clerestory with three C14 windows each with two trefoiled ogee lights in a segmental head. Interior: Nave arcades of four bays with two-centred arches of two orders, the outer moulded and the inner chamfered and springing from attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases, shafts continued up to support roof principals; north aisle doorway c.1300 with two-centred arch. Tower arches two-centred of two orders, the outer wave-moulded and continuous and the inner chamfered and springing from attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases; west doorway with four-centred head; stair turret doorway with chamfered jambs and four-centred head and C16 door. North and south transept arches to the aisles C13 extended in the C15. Rood loft door with linen fold panelling. North and south chapels with corbelled C13 west archways. Chancel arch c.1300 two-centred of two chamfered orders the inner springing from semi-octagonal moulded corbels, north wall C13 arcade of two bays with two-centred arches of two chamfered orders with moulded labels, central quatrefoil column with moulded cap and base; south arcade of three bays with more elaborate mouldings. Chancel, north and south chapel roofs incorporate C14 timbers, and reused material and carved details in nave and transept roofs. Font, octagonal bowl with plain sunk panels c.1300. Six late C13 lockers; three niches C14. Piscinae; in north chapel late C13, in south chapel C15 and C13, in north transept C13, in south transept C14. Sedilia in north chapel of three stepped bays. Screen C15 of six bay with traces of painted decoration; pulpit hexagonal and dated 1631 with initials H.S., I.P, and R.E., C16 seating in north transept, stalls in chancel restored late C15.
