House and inn, now commercial premises, with offices above.
C16, C17 rebuilding with C19 alterations. Timber-framed,
stuccoed with masonry lining, first floor jettied with cavetto
moulding over projecting beam ends, old tiled roof above
moulded eaves cornice.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 3 first floor sash windows with glazing
bars, flush-set with moulded architrave surrounds. Ground
floor has early C19 24 paned oriel bay shop window with
slender glazing bars, fascia and plain cornice, flanked by
half glazed door, 3 steps up from street level, with
wrought-iron railing. Carriageway on right paved with cobbles
and twin tracks of granite setts. Exposed beams in ceiling.
Long rear outshoot in 2 sections, 2 storeys timber-framed,
plastered with projecting first floor canted oriel window
carried on braces, lower section timber-framed, plastered with
casement windows. Barn behind with colourwashed brick ground
floor, and weatherboarded first floor, old tiled roof.
Weatherboarded stables further to rear.
INTERIOR: contains early C18 moulded wood cornice in ground
floor front room, plain newel stair behind front range,
originally leading from ground floor, with direct access from
rear yard. Roof much altered, and notched rafters indicate
that an earlier crown-post structure was substantially rebuilt
early C17. Adjoins the historic site of The George Inn, No.29
High Street (qv), and may have been used as extra
accommodation for hostelry.
