Sea-water baths and assembly room, now private house. 1835. Painted stucco and
rusticated ashlar, with angle pilasters, string course and heavily-moulded
cornice, on chamfered plinth. Graduated slate roof with cement rendered chimney
stacks. 2 storeys, 5 bays. Central 3 bays within 2-storey tetrastyle Ionic
portico in antis. Top-glazed double doors in pilastered surround. Sash windows
with glazing bars in plain reveals. Rear has glazed C20 veranda under scrolled
wrought-iron balcony. Upper-floor French windows with margin lights in
pilastered surrounds. Mannix & Whellan's, Directory, 1847, p.452, states "a
suite of hot, cold and vapour baths was erected in 1835, at a cost of £1,800,
raised in shares of £5 each. In the same building are news and assembly rooms,
the former supported by a subscription of 1s. a week, 3s. a month or 7s. a
year." Lean-to outbuilding at right front is not of interest.
