Water tower at naval hospital. 1881-5. Red brick with limestone dressings and a lead pyramidal roof. Italianate style. Square plan. Tall battered plinth to band with a round-arched entrance, sides have 2-stage narrow windows within round-arched surrounds with stone frames, transom panels and rusticated keys to hood moulds, beneath a bracketed cornice; upper stage containing the tank has 2 keyed oculi each side, to deep timber bracketed eaves, with an upper stage to the roof with simpler oculi and brackets and a weather vane. A single storey range to the N may have contained the steam-powered pumps. INTERIOR not inspected but reported to contain a ladder through the open lower section to the tank. HISTORY: Replaced a tower of 1855 when the sewerage system was renewed. In the style typical of C19 waterworks structures, forming a local landmark, the tower stands within the outstanding and remarkably complete C18 hospital complex.
