BAMBURGH CHURCH STREET NU 1734 (North side) 17/35 Mackenzie and Robb Graves c.50 yards south-west of Church of St. Aidan GV II 2 gravestones: 1. Mackenzie. 1843. Sandstone. A broken pillar on a high base. Inscribed: "To the memory of the Rev. John Morell Mackenzie M.A., late professor of Biblical criticism and church history in the Glasgow Theological Academy, who lost his life in the wreck of the steam-ship Pegasus off the Goldstone rock on the morning of the 20th July 1843. This stone, the frail memorial of worth which is imperishable has been erected by his widow. Endowed with talents of the highest order which he assiduously cultivated, possessing stores of varied and valuable learning to which he was constantly adding; and endowed with the graces of a naturally amiable disposition and the .... of a sincere and deep-toned piety, he was happy, honoured and useful in life and in death. Amid circumstances of a peculiarly appalling character he offered a striking example of the power of that religion which he professed ...." The Rev. Mackenzie is said to have gathered the passengers around him and prayed aloud as they drowned. 2. John Robb. 1838. Sandstone tablet with shaped top to "Rev. John Robb, minister of the united parishes of Dunkeld and Dowally, who perished in the wreck of the Forfarshire."
