Row of 5 cottages and attached barn. Nos 2, 3 and 4 were originally a house of
1671 with 3-room through-passage plan. No 1 was added late C18, No 5 and barn
was added early to mid C19. Hammer dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys.
Earliest build Nos 4, 3 and 2 have double chamfered mullioned window of 4
lights, 6 lights with king mullion, inserted doorway with monolithic jambs to
left of original doorway to through-passage which has composite jambs. Tudor
arched lintel inscribed with cyma moulded surround. Continuous

hoodmould with straight returns over these windows and doorway. 3-light and 2-
light (fire-window?) chamfered mullioned windows. Quoins at junction of No 1.
1st floor has some chamfered mullioned windows of 4 lights. No 1, added to
right, has 3-light flat faced mullioned window to each floor and doorway with
monolithic jambs. Quoins. Higher roof line. No 5 is cottage taken out of
added C19 barn with mistal doorway with monolithic jambs. All are later
inserted windows. Left hand return wall of barn has quoined angles, 2-light t
flat faced mullioned windows and coped gable with kneelers. Rear has largely
altered windows. No 3 preserves 3-light chamfered mullioned window to 1st
floor. 4 stacks to ridge, one backs on to through-passage, and 3 others. The
house of 1671 was the former house of Samuel Ogden celebrated late C17 clock
maker of the Halifax district, one of his clocks being on display in Shibden
Hall museum, Halifax.
