Description

TQ 56 43 BIDBOROUGH HIGH STREET (south end)

11/18 1 and 2 Sycamore Cottages

GV II

Pair of cottages. Probably early C19, perhaps earlier. Framed construction,
the ground floor hung with painted clay tiles, the first floor weatherboarded;
peg-tile roof; brick stacks.

Plan: Single depth north-facing range, 3 rooms wide with a possibly original
rear right wing and additional rear service rooms. The 2 right hand rooms
probably share the axial stack to right of centre, the left end room is heated
from a left end stack. Front doors to left of centre and at right end.

Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with regular fenestration.
Post-1956 porch to the left hand door (National Monuments Record photograph).
2- and 3-light C19 or early C20 timber casements with glazing bars. Gable-
ended roof, stacks with corbelled brick cornices.

Interior: No access to interior at time of survey (1988). Features of
interest may survive and an interior inspection might necessitate revising the
suggested date.

Photograph of 1956 in National Monuments Record.
