House. Circa early C16, late C17 remodelling and extension, some C19 and C20
alterations. Cob and stone rubble, mostly whitewashed and rendered, projecting
stone lateral stack to rear with tall brick shaft. Slate roofs gabled at ends,
chimneys of local brick. Evidence of circa early C16 2-bay open hall at right end
of main range. Rear lateral stack to left of open hall may be late C16. Hall
probably ceiled over and right gable end stack added late C17, evidence of former
newel stair to first floor. Late C17 wing projects from front at left and may
have been service rooms with accommodation over. Gable end chimney to wing
dismantled early C20. L plan. 2 storeys. Main range has asymmetrical 4-window
front with wide circa late C18 half-glazed front door with 3 panels below middle
rail and rectangular fanlight with marginal glazing and central lozenge shaped
pane. Ground floor window lighting hall transomed 3-light window with leaded
panes. First floor window left circa late C18 2-light sliding sash, 9 panes per
light. First floor window to right above front door C20 4-pane sash, next 2-light
C20 casement, 2 panes per light. First floor window right 6-light early C20
casement, 3 panes per light. Chamber in left wing formerly had a 9-light row of
late C17 lights with leaded panes, central 3 lights now missing and blocked.
Stanchions remain to left hand lights.
Interior: Ground floor room right, probably late C17 kitchen, passage and hall,
now undivided. Slate floor. Fireplace to lateral stack has large unhewn
fireplace beam. Right gable end fireplace ashlar masonry with ovolo-moulded
stopped fireplace beam. Axial stack to wing has large fireplace with repaired
ovolo-moulded fireplace beam. First floor fireplace to gable end of wing has
ovolo-moulded fireplace beam. 2 smoke-blackened raised crucks over right end of
main range formerly with threaded purlins to principals and collars halved and
pegged. Ridge, now missing, was diagonally-set. C19 roof above smoke-blackened
roof. Trusses in wing have cambered collars halved and pegged to principals and
trenched purlins. Whitewashed cob wall on stone plinth projects south from right
of front forming front courtyard to house. Burshill Manor was inherited by 16
owners in succession named John Bryant.
