Terrace of villas. 1832. Ten semi-detached linked villas on slope of hill along north side of square. Planned in 1828 and laid out in 1832 by John Booth, and his son, also John, Surveyors for the Lloyd Baker Estate; another son William Joseph, architect. Brown and gold stock bricks set in Flemish bond with stucco dressings, and stucco pediment over each pair; Welsh and artificial slate gabled roofs, many with roof extensions, others obscured by parapet; brick centre stacks. Side-hall entrance plan to outer linked bay of each house. Restrained Greek Revival style. Two-storeys with basement; 2 windows each including recessed 1-window entrance bay coupled as link and left-hand (Cumberland Gardens) and right-hand (Lloyd Street) return walls with scattered windows. Low steps rise to deeply recessed stucco entrance with antae supporting entablature except no. 15 (altered). Architraved (no. 20 with reeded surround with corner stops) doorway with corniced-head, rectangular overlight and original panelled door except nos. 14 and 18 (C20 door). Architraved sashes throughout: ground-floor predominantly 6/6 sashes (with margin lights) and no. 17 with cast-iron window guards. 1st floor mostly with 2/2 and 6/6 sashes with margin lights; returns with scattered and irregular sashes. 1st floor recessed balconied links with narrower doors or sashes: nos. 15-16 with deteriorated turned wooden columns which once supported 1st floor porch roof and with notable patching in to brick wall; nos. 21-22 with cast-iron structure with glazed roof and Neoclassical support. Plain stucco band beneath pediments (nos. 16, 17, 18, & 19 with stucco infill to lower corners); stucco parapet with stucco coping or blocking course to 1st floor recessed link. Good paved flagstones to nos. 14 & 15 entrance steps and walk. Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials.
