- II Stanhill Road)
Farmhouse, Cl7, now house (part restored, part ruinous). Sandstone rubble
in graduated courses, with quoins, stone slate roof now on 2 slightly
different levels. Three-bay baffle-entry plan with 3rd bay built as
crosswing, and stair turret to rear of 2nd bay. Two storeys; 1st bay
restored with mullion window on each floor, moulded doorcase close to
junction of 2nd bay; 2nd bay has a 5-light stone mullion window with
hoodmould. 2- and 3-light mullion windows at 1st floor; gable of wing
(ruinous) projects slightly, has one double-chamfered stone mullion window
on each floor, and a small attic light with rounded head and hollow
spandrels. Rear has 6 stone mullion windows (one ex situ) and a small
round-headed stairlight. Interior: cyma stop-chamfered beams; stone
spiral staircase; smoke hood at junction of 1st and 2nd bays (fireplace
removed). History: home of Robert ("Parsley") Peel, who is said to have
conducted early calico printing experiments here. Birthplace of
